Quite a few tarot decks present the Death card with an image of a scythe toting Grim Reaper or animated skeleton. Cinematic illusions on the silver screen, infected with ignorance and glamour always present the Death card as a forerunner for some ill or evil that is to be feared. Any number of us may be able to recollect a time in our lives where we have seen on television a dimly lit room full of relics, wherein an eccentric woman sits at a table shuffling tarot cards for a troubled client whose estranged luck has chosen humor by influencing the reading with an appearance by Doc Le Morte and then the dramatic music cues up, lightening flickers outside adding to the scenes staged intensity. I’m saying, “HA! HA!”

However there are other decks with venturesome pictorials for Death 13. For example, in The World Spirit Tarot illustrated by Lauren O’Leary, a woman is flexed over a flame phoenix pyre. It is a powerful scene where onlookers lament and the Grim Reaper falling to his knees shifts his eyes from the blaze. The overall notion one gets is of surrendering to a transformation more so than fearing “evil”. xiiiMrsGrayDivinescan2djthumb

Key 13 heralds the chopping up of energy within the body that entices us to surrender to a force greater than ourselves. This force attracts and when used wisely, expels from our hearts and personal wills things that separate us from entering higher levels of pure consciousness. Truthfully I feel that there isn’t a clear way to “describe” the Death card. Ultimately, it is an understanding that has to be experienced.

There are some occult schools of thought who ascribe zodiac signs to tarot. Currently the seventh sign of the tropical zodiac, Scorpio, is associated with Key 13, Death. On the human body, Scorpio is ruler over the sexual organs. From the East comes the saying that orgasms are “little deaths”. Indeed if that be the case, so be it.
