Two Swords

Tradition inspired renditions of Two Swords feature a woman with dark hair sitting on top of a cube in front of a large body of water, wielding two swords across her chest in the form of an “X”.  The woman is also often shown wearing a blindfold, which increases a pervading sense of arrest to an already quiet and still scene.  Here, the wind and landscape appears quiet; not even the waters dare to ripple.  It seems that by the sheer power of her mind, the main character in Two Swords is managing to symbolically counteract the inevitable force of change.

This card signals a desire to block the unfolding of situations one would rather not deal with.  Instead of accepting the lesson, the questioner is choosing to create a series of tricks and tests to determine what will be allowed to enter in.  It is a position of self enshrouding with hopes of preserving ones chosen stance in the face of opposition(s) occurring in their life.

Inability to accept change is a common ill of our world today.  In far too many regions of a shared Earth, people engage in physical and spiritual war seeking to preserve and advance their chosen life tenants despite the life tenants of others they disregard in the process.  This approach has always been and will continue to be a no-win solution.

As apparent in Two Swords, although the strategic blocks created by the mind appear promising, the dark haired woman wielding the swords will grow older.  Her hair will become gray and her arms will tire of brandishing defenses in such a complex, unsustainable manner.  The cube she sits on will not prevent the waters presently flanking it from rising.  In the end, one has not brought anything to a halt.  Energy and focus that could have been used to embrace a truth about life (equals change) has been wasted due to fear and ego driven self preservation.

Two Swords card is from the Tarot of Trance.  Eva Maria Nitsche is the artist.
